A Custom suit is made to your exact measurements in a style of your choosing. It is the best option if your budget allows for it. It will fit you like a second skin and you’ll feel great wearing it.
The term ‘Custom’ is often used synonymously with bespoke, but it’s important to understand the difference. Most bespoke tailors offer both bespoke and MTM (made to measure) suits, so if you’re not sure what the different options are make sure to ask your potential tailor.
Bespoke is much more expensive than MTM, and the process takes longer. Bespoke is a completely personalised process, with the tailor starting from scratch, while MTM starts from a pre-made pattern that they adapt to your measurements.
MTM is the most popular choice for men wanting a custom suit. There are plenty of companies that offer MTM suits – from online ordering and submitting your own measurements, to going into showrooms to get measured by a professional – including Oliver Wicks, Indochino, Blank Label and Black Lapel.
When deciding on your MTM or bespoke tailor, you should always check their website for reviews and if they have a showroom nearby. If possible, I recommend having alterations made on another garment of yours before you start talking about a suit, as this will give you a better idea of how well the tailor works and makes you feel comfortable. Also, if you can bring visuals with you, it helps the tailor paint a picture of what your suit will look like. Custom suit
